Our Current Community Projects in Maras, Peru

Our Chairman and Founder, José Luis Herrera, believes in the power of education, and he has established ARI as a leader in creating and implementing high-value educational programs to insure the ongoing wellbeing of indigenous communities in Peru, beginning with our work in Maras and extending through the Sacred Valley.

Thanks to your generous support, our new Headquarters in Maras is up and running, and we’ve had several seasons of successful language and art classes for the children of Maras. We’ve also been able to furnish one of our classrooms with new computers, new custom desks, and security measures to keep the equipment safe. We’re excited to be adding core communication and computer technology skills to our curriculum!

As always, we’re visioning the evolution of our dream, and these are some of the programs we’re hoping to add in the near future:

  • A pottery kiln and pottery classes to create another artisanal profession and income stream
  • Classes in hygiene, cooking, and food production using green houses so communities can take charge of their health and nurturance and gain skills needed to attract tourism
  • A sustainable tourism program, including family-owned hostels and cultural education events for tourists, to create more income streams into the village
  • A licensed radio station housed in our new Headquarters to increase our communications with rural areas
  • Expansion of the current English Language classes for children and young adults
  • Expansion of our Arts Program and local Artists School, including student art demonstrations and exhibits
  • Expansion of ARI’s highly successful Women’s Weaving program

ARI Global Headquarters

Our new Global Headquarters has been the vision of our Chairman, José Luis Herrera. With incredible skill and ingenuity he gathered a great team in Maras and guided the building process step by step. The main building is nearly finished, with just a few interior details to complete. The Headquarters houses classroom spaces, clinic spaces, and Volunteer quarters, and soon our new Outdoor Arts Center will come to life behind the main building. This 2000 sq ft area will be covered with a new roof, remaining open to our courtyard space, where our Successful Weaving Program was held. We’re planning on acquiring a pottery kiln for this space so we can expand our new pottery classes, and we’ll add other skills classes as well.

Our Headquarters Fund also covers maintenance and repairs that are vital in keeping our building and grounds in good shape. Before we build the roof over our Arts Center, we’re asking your support for Earthquake Repairs. A few walls critical to supporting the roof were damaged in a recent earthquake, and they’ll need to be repaired before the roof goes up. We’ll have a Water Well Project in the near future as well. Donate now to help us expand and maintain our Global Headquarters facilities!

ARI Volunteer Program

Great news! Our wonderful Volunteer Program is returning this August. What does an ARI Volunteer do? You can assist us with any of our current programs, or bring us your ideas about how to share your special skills! If you’re a builder, you can volunteer to help with our Outdoor Arts Center, or help us with finishing details inside our Headquarters working spaces. If you have language skills, you can help with our language programs, teaching our wonderful kids, or helping us add adult classes. If you’re an artist, you can help deliver our art classes, and perhaps share your special artistic skills. If you have medical expertise, talk to us about our returning Dental Program and our new Vision Program. Let us know your ideas! Visit our Volunteer Program page for more information on how to sign up!

ARI Classroom Fund

The children of the Sacred Valley, like children everywhere, are the future of the current generation and their culture. We’ve already been making a life-empowering difference for our local students with our language, art, and computer classes. Currently, we’re focused on the schools in the village of Maras, helping these wonderful children gain the skills they need for success in the modern world and at the same time retain and nurture their beautiful culture. Your generous donations have already helped us fill one classroom with computers and all the necessary peripheral equipment. Your continued support will help us buy the books, pens, paper, and art materials we need for all our classes, as well as insure our fantastic local teachers are paid well.
